What is Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship is an “earn while you learn” style of training that combines on-the-job training with related job instruction (also known as Related Supplemental Instruction (RSI)). On-the-job training is provided by the employer that hires the apprentice. Apprenticeship is an industry-driven, high-quality career pathway where employers can develop and prepare their future workforce, and individuals can obtain paid work experience, classroom instruction, and a portable, nationally recognized credential.

According to Apprenticeship.gov, there are five key components of an apprenticeship. These components differentiate apprenticeships from other types of workplace training programs in several ways:

Requirements to Apply

Before you can be accepted into our Apprenticeship Program, you must meet these requirements:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Must have “original” GED / High School Diploma, “sealed” transcript or certified e-copy. (US Only)
  • Must provide recent DMV printout (Recommended: no more than 1 point on record)
  • Valid Drivers License
  • SSN or other Government-issued ID (need to bring original)

Application Process

Step 1: Register for a scheduled Open House

Slots are limited and spaces are reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. You will be notified by email if you have successfully registered.

Step 2: After you register

Once you receive your confirmation email, please prepare the following documents:

  • Original U.S. HS Diploma/ GED, Sealed transcript OR certified e-copy
  • Valid CA Driver License
  • Recent DMV Report
  • SSN Card or Government Issued ID

These must be in hand when you attend the first day of the Open House. Anyone without any one of the above items will not be allowed to continue.

Step 3: Attend the Open House

Attend the 3 Day Application Process, known as our “Open House”

Work wear, comfortable shoes, long pants, long sleeved shirt and drinking water are highly recommended as testing may take the majority of the day. Shorts, capris & open toed shoes are not allowed.

The Open House is a 3-day process:

1. Orientation – (Day 1)

2. Written Exam – (Day 1)

3. Physical Agility Test – (Day 1 & 2)

4. Drug Test – (Day 2)

5. Oral Interview – (Day 3)**

**Oral Interview Schedules are made at the end of Day 2. Your interview time and date may not necessarily be on the very next day. Please make sure to keep your schedule open during the whole week of Open House**

Once you have completed all 3 days of the Open House, you will be notified via regular mail of your acceptance or denial.

Step 4: Eligible Applicant List

Once you have been accepted as an eligible applicant, you will be placed in ranked order on our eligible applicant list.

A Laborers’ Local 1184 Business Agent will be in contact with you when a job opening occurs. At that time, you will be scheduled to join the Laborers’ Union Local #1184 and begin both your journey as a Local #1184 Member and as a Parking & Highway Improvement apprentice.

Step 5: Feel the POWER!

You are now on your path to becoming a Certified Pavement Striper, Road Slurry, Seal Coat & Highway Maintenance Journey Worker with many career pathways in the industry. Alongside your training, the most important thing you can do is stay involved with your Local Union, attend meetings, and make your voice heard. Most importantly, “FEEL THE POWER!”

What to Expect

By applying to the Southern California Pavement Striper, Road Slurry, Seal Coat & Highway Maintenance Apprenticeship Program, you will have taken your first step to becoming a Local 1184 Union Laborer where you will earn while you learn, which means you will be working on the job site and taking classes in the classroom.

Earn While You Learn

Our apprenticeship program provides the opportunity to earn a living family wage through On-The-Job Training (or O.J.T.) while learning the in-demand skills of our trade through Related Supplemental Instruction (or R.S.I.).  By meeting our O.J.T. and R.S.I. requirements, you can move up the wage scale and earn MORE money!  

On-The-Job Training (OJT)

For each period you move up, you will collect work hours of On-The-Job Training (OJT) alongside your classroom instruction

Related Supplemental Instruction (RSI)

For each period, you must complete your Related Supplemental Instruction (RSI) hours in the classroom covering Certification Courses & Industry Courses.
